Tiburón (Shark) is a theatre project that reconstructs the life of José María de Barahona and the attempt of actor Gabino Rodríguez to become this character. José María de Barahona was an evangelist who arrived in Tiburón Island in the 16th century from Seville. There are few texts to recreate the life of José María de Barahona: some documents are missing and, the few that are available are not complete, not dated or maybe aprocrypal. The surviving letters of what he himself wrote on Tiburon Island and which Andrés Pérez de Ribas recovered in his book Triumphs of our Holy Faith among these tribes, the most barbaric in the North are the main source.

Tiburón Island is the largest one in Mexico, with over 1,208 km2. It is located in the Sea of Cortez, in the state of Sonora. The Tocariku people live on the west side of the island; they've been living isolated in this territory for over 600 years, to a large extent, voluntarily. It was with them that José María de Barahona lived for at least ten years. On 17 August 2019, Gabino Rodríguez made a trip to Tiburón Island, his last trip.

The contact with the inhabitants of the island and the remarkable differences found there raise questions: How do we encounter other cultures? What do we think is unacceptable? Do we have the right to try to change them? Days go by and the actor's experience begins to mix with that of the missionary José María de Barahona, to the point where they do not differentiate themselves.
